No Man Is Just A Number.

Why it is hard sci-fi

McGoohans 1967 series about a former intelligence agent kidnapped to a coastal Village run by an unidentified authority. The show commits to one rule. Number Six refuses to identify himself and his captors refuse to release him. Each weeks episode is a different escape attempt or a different psychological pressure. The shows technology is small-scale but the institutional design of the Village is the working subject.

Science inside it

Behavioural conditioning, surveillance with a working reach, drug-assisted interrogation, and a sequential set of psychological pressure techniques. The show is also an early TV portrayal of a controlled environment as a research instrument, with the Village as a closed system and the protagonist as the subject.
