That’s an unanswerable question. I have no frame of reference. No one does. Experience is entirely subjective. What’s it like to be YOU?
Why it is hard sci-fi
A near-future UK in which synthetic humans called synths are a household appliance. The shows interest is in the moment when synths begin to have self-aware experiences. The series commits to a strict rule. Most synths are not conscious. A handful are, and each one is the result of a specific code modification by a single engineer. The legal, social, and family consequences of that modification drive the series.
Science inside it
Embodied AI with consumer integration, hidden self-aware code paths, the shape of a synth black market, and the social-policy response to a partly conscious labour fleet. The show is one of the few near-future portrayals of synthetic personhood that takes the everyday integration seriously rather than the spectacle of it.
