Why it is hard sci-fi
A prequel to the 2004 Battlestar Galactica reboot set fifty years before the Cylon war. The show is procedural about the engineering origin of the Cylons. A holographic virtual world called New Cap City, an avatar of a dead daughter that is uploaded into a Cylon prototype, and a corporate research program with regulators. The shows working idea is that a digital avatar with persistent state is the same problem as a synthetic person, and the show tracks the legal and ethical consequences.
Science inside it
Avatar persistence, immersive virtual environments with real economies, monotheistic terrorism in a polytheistic culture as a social-science driver, and the engineering shape of an early Cylon. The show is honest that the upload-into-a-body procedure is the central scientific claim and treats it as a research problem rather than a magic trick.
