Why it is hard sci-fi
Carruth s second feature is a sparse procedural about a parasitic life cycle that runs through a worm, a pig, and an orchid, with humans as the affected stage. The film does not narrate. The viewer reconstructs the cycle by watching the operations of three connected actors. The biology is fictional but the filmmaking discipline is documentary.
Science inside it
A multi-host parasitic life cycle inspired by real trematode and toxoplasma biology, with a behavioural-modification stage that allows a thief to operate on the human host. The films interest is in the way the host loses the boundary of self under a sufficiently invasive infection.
