I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed, and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You’re a plague. And we, are the cure.

Why it is hard sci-fi

Soft on the energetics, hard on the rule grammar. The films premise that human bodies are used as batteries is famously wrong on thermodynamics, and was reportedly a studio note replacing an earlier brain-as-substrate idea. What the film commits to is the rule that the Matrix is a software construct with consistent physics for the people inside it, and that breaking the rules requires either administrative privilege or freed humans with practiced subconscious access.

Science inside it

Brain-computer interfaces for full-immersion simulation, agent-based countermeasures inside a software environment, and the films internally consistent rule that the body in the real world cannot survive what the mind experiences as fatal in the simulation. The films red pill is a tracer that the Nebuchadnezzar can lock onto, which is at least operational science.
