Live. Die. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Why it is hard sci-fi

Bong adapts a near-future setting where colonial expeditions employ Expendables. Workers who can be reprinted from a stored body scan and an overnight memory upload after each death. The film commits to the rule. Death is resource consumption. A new body is grown each cycle. Overlap between two simultaneous instances is illegal under colonial law, which gives the film its central operational problem.

Science inside it

Print-on-demand cloning with a working memory-upload pipeline, the colonial economy of expendable labour, and the legal regime that makes a multiple a capital offence in order to keep the Expendable system operationally clean. The films central malfunction is a duplicate, which forces the system to confront the rule it is built on.
