If they hear you, they hunt you.

Why it is hard sci-fi

A near-future US after an extraterrestrial species with no eyes has driven humans into silent rural living. The film commits to one rule. The creatures hunt by sound and they are functionally invulnerable to small arms. The family at the centre uses sand paths, sign language, and acoustic decoys to survive. The procedural rigour is in the daily logistics. Everything they do is shaped by the constraint.

Science inside it

Acoustic predation, the engineering of a silent household across a year, and the use of high-frequency feedback against a creature with sensitive hearing. The films one good experiment is the daughter s cochlear implant, which is the eventual mechanism for finding a frequency the creatures cannot tolerate.
